Thoughts For The Times On Wars and Psychoanalysis

“In the confusion of wartime in which we are caught up, relying as we must on one-sided information, standing too close to the great changes that have already taken place or are beginning to, and without a glimmering of the future that is being shaped, we ourselves are at a loss as to the significance of the impressions which press in upon us and as to the value of the judgments which we form. We cannot but feel that no event has ever destroyed so much that is precious in the common possessions of humanity, confused so many of the clearest intelligences, or so thoroughly debased what is highes.” These words of Sigmund Freud, written six months after the start of the First World War, are surprisingly very relevant today not only for Ukrainians, but also for many people in the world. Military aggression between civilized states is monstrous, but modern wars are not limited to this. They acquire hitherto unseen features and scope due to the fact that the modern subject is completely placed in the digital universe, which means that it is subject to “digitization”, control and unification. All this can be called digital transformation. The expression “digital transformation” has become often mentioned in the discourse of modern society. In a very short period of time (30 years – a really short period of time on the scale of history), humanity has come to a situation in which the “digit” is present in all aspects of life. Gradually, more and more objects of the physical world are connected to the Internet, which allows for the collection of information and even remote control of people. In fact, a virtual copy of the physical object and the outside world appears on the Internet. Staying online and offline overlap, the border between them is becoming less and less obvious. The concept of “on-life experience” appears, in which both worlds are already inseparable. This leaves an imprint not only on society and the subject, but also on modern warfare. Psychoanalytic practice is subjected to serious trials and changes in the prevailing conditions. Recent social processes have changed the conditions for the existence of psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts. The pandemic and quarantine have dramatically affected the psychoanalytic setting in all corners of the world. The war in the center of Europe, in Ukraine, has increased the need to reconsider the conditions for the existence of psychoanalysis today. Now we can already apply the terms “digital transformation” and “wars in the digital universe”, comprehending the impact of the development of digital technologies on the mentality of a modern person. What are these possible transformations? How do they happen? What psychopathologies in connection with these transformations can we already observe in the psychoanalytic clinic? What are the forecasts for the future? What are the principles and features of a psychoanalytic clinic in the digital space?

We propose to discuss the features of the psychoanalytic clinic in today’s conditions, modern psychopathology, as well as the place and role of psychoanalysis in the conditions of modern wars and the digital universe at the International Forum “Thoughts For The Times On Wars and Psychoanalysis”.
