We invite everyone interested in psychoanalysis to participate in the work of the 10th anniversary International Psychoanalytic School ‘Psychoanalysis and Law: Between a Rock and a Hard Place.’

Reflections on psychoanalysis and law seem to lead to an understanding of the legal existence of psychoanalysis (within the field of law), but this is precisely what always leads psychoanalysis to the question: ‘To be or not to be?’ This paradoxical relationship between psychoanalysis and law highlights a feature that Freud once noted: ‘… the internal possibilities of the development of psychoanalysis cannot be grasped by prescriptions and prohibitions.’

In almost every case, the move towards the legal field is based on the motive of preserving and protecting psychoanalysis, but this move ultimately turns into a threat of its complete destruction. Based on this, we must ask ourselves what exactly can be destroyed: theory, practice, which includes certain technical techniques and the ethical position of the psychoanalyst, the method of studying various phenomena of human life, or the psychoanalytic view of the world through the prism of the unconscious and the history of the subject? It is obvious that psychoanalysis as a subjectivising practice cannot fit into the objectivising framework of science, state systems and the law. Therefore, it seems that psychoanalytic practice in its legal manifestations, within the limits of legislative prescriptions, is most at risk. It is either an anvil before the hammer of state law or, in the case of institutional power, a sadistic hammer against the development of the psychoanalytic community and the spread of psychoanalytic thought.

We invite you to consider psychoanalytic ideas about the law, discuss the peculiarities of psychoanalytic clinics in today’s conditions, and outline possible ways of developing psychoanalysis both within and outside the framework of state law.

The school’s programme includes lectures, author’s master classes, presentations of clinical cases, supervision, discussions…
